Formally adopted in loc 2659 on 17/7/1874 the .577/450 Martini Henry was introduced by the British. On January 22-23, 1879 the .577/450 Martini Henry became a legendary rifle. On these dates at Rorke’s Drift in Natal, South Africa 140 men of the British army’s B Company, 24th Regiment held off over 4,000 Zulu warriors in an intense battle. This small yet determined force of soldiers fired over 20,000 rounds to fend off the attack with a loss of 17 killed and 15 wounded. The Zulu’s suffered a loss of 351 killed and over 500 wounded.

Originally, the .577/450 Martini Henry cases were made of rolled brass foil with an iron rim. The .577/450 Martini Henry was used extensively by the British throughout Africa and India, and was still in military production as late as World War I.

The .577/450 Martini Henry is capable of propelling a .465” dia. 480 grain bullet at 1,350 fps with 1,940 ft.-lbs. of energy. In the late 1800’s the British took their new .303 caliber rifle to fight the Punjab on the north India frontier. They found the new .303 caliber bullet would require several hits to incapacitate the Punjab, so they recommissioned the .577/450 Martini Henry and that solved the problem.
