MAUSER MOD 1896 by Ludwig Loewe 7x57mm Bolt Action Rifle

MAUSER MOD 1896 by Ludwig Loewe 7x57mm Bolt Action Rifle. This rare Boer War Mauser bolt action rifle is chambered in the excellent 7×57 cartridge rifle and is manufactured by Loewe and Co. (who later became DWM) The rifle has matching serial numbers  to bolt stock and action.

This carbine comes from the Second Boer War (11 Oct 1899 to the 31 May 1902) which kicked off when gold and other mineral deposits were discovered on Boer land and British interest was renewed. During the first Boer War, the Boers had been armed with a mix of varying rifles such as Sniders, Martinis, muzzleloaders and anything else the people of the land used to hunt game with. In order to be a citizen of the Boer republic you needed to have a rifle, ammunition, horse and enough food to last several weeks should your service be required to defend. In the lead up to the second conflict, the need to standardize rifles and ammunition was sought and several different weapons systems were trialled before the Mauser system was engaged. The Boers were to develop such a love for their Mausers that it became part of the National slogan ‘With God and a Mauser’. 30,000 long Mauser rifles and 7,000 carbines for which the example in our sale is one of were purchased, another batch were ordered but struggled to make it through to the Boers due to British occupation of supply routes. These rifles and carbines were then sold to the citizens rather than issued in the same way regular armies armed their troops. As a consequence of ownership the Boers would often carve their names, identifying marks or other embellishments to their firearms.

This is an excellent rifle in great original condition. Good bore but had the cleaning rod missing.

MAUSER MOD 1896 by Ludwig Loewe 7x57mm Bolt Action Rifle

Ludwig Loewe & Co. was founded around 1861 by German merchant Ludwig Loewe; the company became a limited partnership company around 1869 and began to produce sewing machines. Sometime around the 1870s, the company began to produce arms for the Prussian Army, in addition to manufacturing general machinery such as boilers, steam engines and other machining tools.

In addition to producing arms in their own factory, Ludwig Loewe & Co. held a controlling stake in the Mauser factories, and collaborated with them to produce various weapons, most notably the C93 and the Parabellum-Pistole.

The company became a joint stock company in 1893, and co-founded Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken AG with Mauser and Metallpatronen AG in 1896; at this stage, most arms production from Ludwig Loewe & Co. was spun off into DWM with Ludwig Loewe & Co. focusing mainly on the production of machinery. The company entered a partnership with AEG in 1903. Ludwig Loewe & Co. merged with Gesellschaft für elektrische Unternehmungen in 1929; the merged company was named Gesfürel.

By 1937 however, Aryanization was occurring and as such all Jewish employees, particularly the descendants of Ludwig Loewe, fled the country and were sent into hiding. Shortly after, the Ludwig Loewe & Co. name was removed from the company. Gesfürel would subsequently be merged with AEG in 1942 or 1943.
