NEI Handtools Casting Flux 10 gram (Carnauba Flake)

NEI Handtools Casting Flux 10 gram (Carnauba Flake). Carnauba wax flakes are highly valued in bullet casting as a hardening agent in custom bullet lubricants (lubricants or “lubes”) for high-velocity and high-pressure loads. Due to its extremely high melting point (approx. 180°F–187°F or 82°C–86°C), it helps prevent leading in barrels and keeps the lube from melting prematurely. Carnuba flake casting flux used to remove most zinc, copper, brass and foreign materials from molten metal. Melted lead temperature should be as low as practical, about 620 – 655 degrees.

Use only a few flakes per fluxing. Stir lead and allow dross to rise to surface for skimming.

This is just the best stuff for getting perfectly clean lead.

Carnauba wax is derived from the leaves of a Brazilian palm tree, Copernicia cerifera. The wax is secreted naturally by the tree's leaves to prevent them from drying out. This wax is a yellow waxy solid varying in colour from intense yellow to light beige.

Tips for Using Carnauba Flakes
  • Double Boiler: Due to the high melting point, a double boiler is required to safely melt the flakes without burning them.
  • Hardness Balance: If the resulting bullet lube is too brittle or causes chambering issues (due to excessive thickness), increase the ratio of softer waxes (like beeswax) or oils.
  • Alternative Source: Some shooters use Johnson's Paste Wax, which has a high carnauba content, instead of pure flakes for convenience.
  • Fluxing: While not its primary use, small amounts of carnauba flakes can be used to flux lead, though they may produce more smoke than typical wax fluxes.
